Web Content Corner with Jenni Powell: 5 Indie Web Series You May NOT Have Seen (but should) Part 2

Posted on 13 June 2011 by Destivar

A few weeks back, I highlighted some of my favorite independently produced web series. After the article posted, I got some many wonderful suggestions of additional series as well as began remembering more series I love so it felt only natural that I do a part II (hopefully to become a regular feature of Web Content Corner).

Just a reminder of the criteria of the series I choose: they were created completely independently and distributed through publicly available video portals (YouTube, blip.tv, Vimeo). As of this writing, they have no brand sponsorships and were funded solely by the creators with some crowd sourced donations. Marketing and distribution were achieved by clever uses of personal social media strategies and all done in-house, with no hiring of publicists, etc. They are in no particular order.

Jenni Powell has been deeply involved in innovative online communities for several years, dating back to the cult Internet series Nobody’s Watching (over 40M views) and later becoming a central figure on the web video breakoutlonelygirl15 fan community. This led to her creating the fan-favorite parody series lonelyJew15, which landed her a job at lonelygirl15′s production company EQAL. She has a strong background in production working with Upright Citizen’s Brigade (UCB) A&E’s Deadliest Catch, and Lifetime’s Lisa Williams Life Amongst The Dead. Online, Jenni has worked on many popular web series such as the smash Microsoft-sponsored hit The Guild, Streamy Award-nominatedWith the AngelsPoor PaulThe Crew, and Comedy Central’s Atom.com standout The Legend of Neil. She freelance writes for popular web entertainment site Tubefilter News and consults on and produces various transmedia entertainment projects around the web, such as the ghost-hunting comedy Bumps in the Night, the No Mimes Media 10 minute transmedia experience Webishades, and the Atom.com series Video Game Reunion. Web Content Corner With Jenni Powell: Sean Becker Part 1

Posted on 31 May 2011 by Destivar

If you haven’t heard of Sean Becker yet, you will.  He’s already won an Emmy and directed one of the few fully sponsored online sensation web series, The Guild, as well as the Jeff Lewis Five Minute Comedy Hour.  I have had the fortune to work with  Becker on more than one occasion and a greater fortune and honor to call Sean a friend.  I was able to grab him recently after wrapping the fifth season of The Guild to ask some questions about his process and the work that has gone into his career.  This is part 1 of a 2 part interview.

Web Content Corner With Jenni Powell: Stephanie Ann Rose Interview

Posted on 23 May 2011 by Destivar

Check out this week’s interview with Stephanie Rose!

“There is sometimes a mistaken belief that “web series” equals “low quality”. Granted, the majority of web series are working with much smaller budgets, which often requires a much more “run-and-gun” style production. That’s why this week I choose to feature an industry professional who is a much-unsung hero of the production crew: the script supervisor.

Stephanie Ann Rose has worked on some the highest profiles series on the web, from The Guild to The Adventures of Justin and Alden toVideo Game Reunion. She talked with me on why her job is so important to invest in, even if your budget is on the slim side.”

Web Content Corner With Jenni Powell: 5 Indie Web Series You May Not Have Seen(But Should)

Posted on 16 May 2011 by Destivar

“Creating content for the web is still often referred to as being in it’s “Wild West” stage of development and while major networks and brands are starting to put their resources behind original scripted series that air exclusively on the web, there is still a great deal of freedom for independent creators to affordably and successfully tell their unique stories for an internet audience.  Add to this the huge upswing in affordable technology to increase production values, it’s now very possible to create engaging, well-shot material at a fraction of the cost.

I wanted to highlight some of my favorite web series of past and present that were created completely independently and distributed through publicly available video portals (YouTube, blip.tv, Vimeo). As of this writing, they have no brand sponsorships and were funded solely by the creators with some crowd sourced donations.  Marketing and distribution were achieved by clever uses of personal social media strategies and all done in-house, with no hiring of publicists, etc.

In other words, these creators kick ass and do it on their own terms.”
