Web Series Creators: Stand Up And Be Counted

What do marketers know about Web video? The industry is currently measured and ranked by its platforms and networks. Youube is viewed as the top media property. And companies like comScore and Nielsen are trying to measure the total viewing audiences across all platforms and devices. All of this information is helpful for agencies and advertisers trying to understand how to engage with Web video. But there is more to understand about this medium.

Unlike previous media revolutions, Web video is not controlled by a few providers and distributors. It’s not run by the studios, the networks, or platforms, but by the creators themselves.  And unlike other forms of media in which the few control the many, these creators will only continue to grow in stature. When it comes to Web video, marketers today need to admit that content creators represent the most powerful media entity. Here’s why.

Celebrate the Web 4: Raising the Bar

What: A ‘Web Pilot Festival’ where a team has one week to write, shoot, edit and deliver a pilot episode for a web series. The theme and guidelines for the web series pilot will be revealed at the beginning of the festival via livestream.

Who: The 1st 12 qualified teams to submit on the Celebrate the Web site onour new submission page.

When: Submissions period for teams is from February 3rd to 19th. Festival begins March 3rd at TBD with final pilot delivered at 9 AM March 9th. The screening of the pilots and the voting for the winner will take place the evening of March 10th at ACME Comedy Theatre, the home of the very first Celebrate the Web!

Cash prize will be awarded to winning team thanks to Blip.tv and additional perks will be announced closer to start of festival!

New Media Interactive Advertising vs. Traditional Advertising

However, over the years, with development, the approach to advertising has seen a huge transition. We are talking about the two approaches to advertising – the New Media Interactive Advertising and the Traditional method of advertising.

The age old mode of advertising is assumptive in nature, which means that the marketing team assumes the temperament of the target audience. They either do a survey of a certain section of society or else predict the nature of customers they are dealing with. The ad campaign and the launch of the ad is done purely on these assumptions. The market trends are calculated and analyzed by studying the previous years’ data and this has been the technique used in conventional advertising. Therefore the whole motive of presenting the audience with an ad comes from hypothesis based on preceding data.

Media Buyers Ignoring New Media

Over the past five years I have been down in the trenches working like a dog to monetize new media content. While I have had significant success with a number of companies, every month I leave 10′s of millions of new media impressions on the table unsold. This is not from a lack of trying that is for sure, but one thing that continues to haunt new media, is that most of the companies spending money in the digital advertising space aka the media buyers are ignoring opportunities to reach audience that have largely shifted away from mainstream content.
