Nintendo bringing Hulu Plus to Wii and 3DS consoles

Posted on 21 October 2011 by Destivar

Nintendo finally catches up to Xbox and PlayStation in the streaming content game

If you own a Wii or 3DS and you’ve been growing restless with the slim pickins in Netflix’s streaming catalogue, you can now relax.  Nintendo announced Friday that it will bring online television streaming service Hulu Plus to its Wii and 3DS consoles.

Hulu Plus is the paid option of Hulu, costing $7.99 per month and will be available on the Wii and 3DS by the end of the year. Current television channels under Hulu’s paid plan are ABC, NBC, FOX, Comedy Central, MTV, and others.

Back in January 2010, Nintendo announced its Wii consoles would be Netlix-accessible — Netflix’s cheapest plan is also $7.99, incidentally — and some have been waiting since then for the other shoe to drop, this shoe being Netflix’s major competitor in online streaming content, Hulu.  Netflix also came to the 3DS over the summer–but still, no mention of Hulu, until now.

The Xbox 360 and PlayStation3 gaming consoles currently have both Netflix and Hulu Plus, so it only made sense that Nintendo would follow suit.

This announcement concerning Hulu Plus comes several months before Nintendo debuts its new console, the WiiU. And while thus far, Nintendo had been behind on bringing streaming content to its current generation of gaming consoles, this new deal may put the company ahead of the curve.

There’s no word yet as to whether the WiiU will have the same compatability with Netflix and Hulu. But Nintendo’s current handheld gaming device, the 3DS, will be Hulu compatible, according to Friday’s news. It’s also not clear whether next-generation hand-held competitors like the PS Vita will be similarly Hulu compatible.

The PS Vita will drop in Asia in December of this year and in Europe and North America in February of 2012. The Nintendo 3DS was released in Asia last December and in Europe and North America last March.

Friday’s announcement came with news of added features for the Nintendo 3DS, including the ability to record 3D video, new recording artists joining Nintendo Video, and new animated video from DreamWorks Animation SKG.

Also, 4 new Nintendo 3DS games soon will be added to the Nintendo eShop.

These titles include Freakyforms, a game where players create creatures and bring them to life; Pushmo, where players solve more than 250 puzzles by pulling and pushing blocks; Swapnote, which allows Nintendo 3DS owners to send 3D messages to their friends; and Dillon’s Rolling Western, a 3D tower defense game.

Hulu Investing in Web Originals, CBS Says Web Series Still Strong Too

Posted on 12 September 2011 by Destivar

Hulu is investing heavily in Web originals, such as “LXD,” “A Day in the Life,” and “The Morning After,” said Kevin McGurn, VP Ad Sales at Hulu, while speaking at a Beet.TV Online Video Leadership webcast in New York last month.

“We have quite a few in the development queue moving forward. We are happy with what we have done so far,” he said. The key to success is, not surprisingly, quality. McGurn pointed to the recent series “The Confession” on Hulu starring Keifer Sutherland, citing it as a top 10 show when it aired. Hulu sells those directly to advertisers, many of whom have renewed in other shows, he added.

CBS too is selling Web originals to advertisers, but measurement remains a complex issue since overall audiences are small. However, CBS’s Ken Lagana, SVP Sales for CBS Interactive, said most sponsors are buying a 360-degree package and measuring success based on interaction on mobile phones and online, as well as Facebook likes and other metrics.

This video is a highlight of the August 23 Beet.TV Online Video Leadership webcast. The entire session can be found here.

Hulu expands its streaming service to Japan

Posted on 03 September 2011 by Destivar

The US online streaming service Hulu, which provides television, films, webisodes and other new media, announced on September 1 its launch in Japan, its first international outlet.

With its plan to grow into a global brand, “We are taking a first, but important step to make good on our aspiration to serve customers all over the world,” said Johannes Larcher, SVP of International for Hulu in a statement, reported The Wrap.

Hulu has one million paying subscribers to its Hulu Plus service, as well as a free version of the service. Competitor Netflix has 25 million members in the US and Canada and no free viewing.

Currently co-owned by Disney/ABC Television, Fox Entertainment and Comcast/NBC Universal, Hulu made an agreement with CBS, the other major broadcast television network, as of September 1.

The non-exclusive arrangement offers select CBS television shows to be available for Hulu’s new subscription service in Japan. Shows include past episodes of CSI: Crime Scene InvestigationCSI: MiamiCSI: NY, and 90210, and from its archives, Star Trek and David Lynch’s Twin Peaks.

This summer, Hulu went up for sale, with potential buyers Google, Amazon, AT&T and Yahoo submitting bids.

The new service in Japan offers subscribers unlimited access to films and television shows without advertising via televisions, gaming consoles, Blu-ray players, smartphones, tablets and PC’s, for ¥1480 (around €13.50) per month.

Google eyes Hulu as a means to bolster its entertainment offerings

Posted on 01 September 2011 by Destivar

It’s not as though Google wants to buy Hulu just for Kansas City.

Still, the fact that it might snatch up the video streaming service hints that the search giant wants to be more than your tour guide to the Web. It needs to make sure the Internet, soon to be delivered to Kansas City at unheard-of speeds, has enough entertainment.

Sure, Google long ago bought up YouTube. But after a while, its videos of kittens being cute and teenage boys passing gas feels a little, well, lacking.

Hulu would give Google a constantly refreshed catalog of professionally produced shows from the old-school television networks. That could give the Mountain View, Calif., company a running start on a cable-like package of TV channels.

By not just leading consumers to content but preparing it for them, Google would be making a slight shift in its billionaire-making business model. Continue Reading

Yahoo to debut eight short-form Web series in fall

Posted on 31 August 2011 by Destivar

Los Angeles - It has been reported that Internet giant Yahoo is premiering eight short-form online series this October. The reality shows will feature Morgan Spurlock, Judy Greer and Niecy Nash. Each show will be aimed towards the sentimental type.

Yahoo has been one of the Internet giants since the mid-1990s. Since its early days as a general search engine and email provider, it has evolved into a company that offers video sharing, social media networking, news and among other things.

It is now entering the Internet television market, otherwise known as the web series. Although Google has openly stated that it will not enter television production, Yahoo is trying to capitalize on the opportunity this autumn.

As of October, Yahoo will be debuting eight short-form web series, but none of them are scripted dramas or sitcoms, according to Variety. This is part of Yahoo Executive Vice President Ross Levinsohn’s strategy to implement premium entertainment content to the Internet.

Unlike other web series startups, Yahoo will be bringing in some well-known celebrities, including Morgan Spurlock of “Super Size Me,” Judy Greer of “Love & Other Drugs,” Niecy Nash of “Reno 911” and Cameron Mathison of “All My Children.”

Spurlock’s show, “The Failure Club,” is a documentary series that attempts to conquer fear of failure. Meanwhile, Nash’s “Let’s Talk About Love” is a weekly show that discusses love and relationships. Greer will host “Healthy Gal: A Work in Progress,” a show that investigates how to best stay fit when travelling on the road.

Other shows include an entertainment news show called “OMG! Now,” two cooking shows, “Blue Ribbon Hunter” and an untitled food program, “Ultimate Proposal,” a program that teaches men how to give a memorable proposal, and a series where a celebrity surprises a fan called “Your Friends Will Never Believe You.”

Yahoo, which has gained considerable grip for its original programming “Prime Time in No Time,” a video recap of the previous evening’s television shows, receives 178 million monthly visitors.

It has been reported that Yahoo is interested in acquiring Internet television service Hulu, which is owned by several companies, including News Corp., Walt Disney Co. and NBCUniversal, notes the Los Angeles Times.
