Sony: Bulldozing Through New Media

Sony, Amazon Said to Be Prepping Media Services.  As if things weren’t already crowded enough with today’s Apple TV announcement and rumors of Google’s possible movie and TV streaming service, Sony and Amazon are being ushered onto the bandwagon.

Word on the street is both Sony and etailer giant Amazon have plans to start their media services. The Financial Times cites sources in the media that say Sony’s new subscription service will launch on the PlayStation 3 first (we assume via the PSN), before creeping across to the company’s other devices, such as its Vaio computers, Sony Ericsson phones, Bravia TVs, Blu-ray players, and Walkman PMPs.  - Read more here

And of course, what is Sony doing with the ps3?

Sony To Launch New Media Subscription Service For PS3, PSP.  Sony is reportedly set to reveal a new music and video subscription service today in Berlin at the IFA technology show. The media offering will run across a range of Sony devices, beginning with PlayStation platforms, according to the Financial Times.

While details on service features are light, it is said to have been in development for two years, and isn’t expected to be available to consumers until 2011 following the completion of content deals with major labels and studios.

The report also suggests that Apple will introduce new social networking features to its iTunes software, integrating Twitter and Facebook functionality, and debut a new iPod with a high-resolution display in line with iPhone 4’s, at a music-themed press conference in California today.
